Former Morongo Casino Resort & Spa chief executive Mike Bean will become property president of Hard Rock Casino Tejon on October 5, taking over from Chris Kelley, who ran the Kern County, California, casino through its opening and first year of operations.
The Tejon Indian Tribe, which owns the property, and Hard Rock confirmed the appointment in an announcement dated September 28. The casino opened on November 14, 2025.
Three decades in tribal gaming
Bean has more than 30 years of experience in gaming and hospitality, much of it in leadership roles at tribal-gaming enterprises, according to the announcement.
Bean was CEO of Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians’ resort in Cabazon, California. He also served as CEO of Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment, the Arizona casino group owned by the Tohono O’odham Nation, and has held senior roles at other gaming and resort companies. The announcement did not name those companies or give dates for his earlier roles.
Jeff Hook, chief operating officer (COO) of Hard Rock International, pointed to Bean’s tribal-gaming record:
“Mike’s proven track record and deep experience in tribal gaming make him an outstanding fit for Hard Rock Casino Tejon. We’re excited to welcome him to the Hard Rock family and look forward to working alongside him and the Tejon Indian Tribe as the property continues to grow.”
Hard Rock International is itself owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Other Hard Rock executives have taken on wider industry roles this year, with George Goldhoff named president of the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ).
Octavio Escobedo III, Chairman of the Tejon Indian Tribe, said:
“On behalf of the Tejon Indian Tribe, we are proud to welcome Mike Bean to Hard Rock Casino Tejon. Mike understands tribal gaming and the responsibility that comes with leading an enterprise that supports a Tribal Nation and its future.”
“He has built a reputation for developing strong teams, delivering operational excellence and creating exceptional experiences for guests and team members alike. We have accomplished a great deal in a short period of time, and with continued growth and new developments on the horizon, we are confident Mike is the right leader to guide our property into its next chapter.”
Kelley leaves after the opening year
Kelley led Hard Rock Casino Tejon through its opening and first year of operations. Escobedo thanked him in the same announcement:
“We thank Chris for his leadership and dedication during an important period in our history, and we wish him continued success.”
The announcement did not say where Kelley is going next.
The property Bean inherits
Hard Rock Casino Tejon sits on Tejon Indian Tribe land in Mettler, less than 15 miles south of Bakersfield and about 90 minutes north of Los Angeles on the I-5 corridor. It was Kern County’s first full-scale casino resort when it opened.
The casino has 150,000 square feet of gaming space, 2,100 slot machines and more than 60 table games, according to the announcement. Dining includes a Hard Rock Cafe, The Marketplace food hall, Deep Cut Steak | Seafood and the Asian restaurant YouYu.
The development cost $600 million and created more than 1,000 permanent jobs and around 5,000 construction jobs, Yogonet reported at the opening. The Tejon Indian Tribe gained federal recognition in 2011 and has 1,523 enrolled members, according to the same report.
The property operates in a state where online casino gaming is not legal, and California banned online sweepstakes casinos under AB 831 a month before Tejon opened. Tribal operators elsewhere in the US are also funding large resort builds, including the Ho-Chunk Nation’s $610 million financing package for its Beloit casino resort.
What comes next
Bean starts on October 5. In his first weeks he will focus on meeting team members, learning the operation and immersing himself in the culture behind the property’s early success, according to the announcement.
Escobedo did not specify which “new developments” the tribe has planned. Plans announced at the opening included a second phase with a 400-room hotel and Hard Rock Live, a 2,800-seat entertainment venue. Neither the tribe nor Hard Rock gave a timeline for Phase II in Monday’s announcement.
