A federal class action lawsuit filed on December 31, 2025, has put Stake.us and several high-profile promoters under legal scrutiny, alleging the sweepstakes casino operated as an illegal gambling platform while celebrity endorsements misled users about the true nature of the service.
The case, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division, represents a significant legal challenge to the sweepstakes casino model and raises questions about where social casino marketing crosses into illegal gambling territory.
Plaintiffs Allege Illegal Gambling Operations Under Sweepstakes Model
Named plaintiffs LaShawnna Ridley and Tiffany Hines, both Stake.us users, claim they suffered financial harm through what they describe as an illegal gambling operation masked as a social casino. The lawsuit targets Sweepsteaks Ltd, the operator of Stake.us, along with rapper Drake, online influencer Adin Ross, and George Nguyen.
Gaming attorney Daniel Wallach first reported the filing shortly after it appeared on the court docket. The complaint alleges that since 2022, the platform has operated in violation of state gambling laws while presenting itself as a legitimate sweepstakes-based social casino.
According to the filing, “By masking its real money gambling platform as a free and safe ‘social casino,’ Stake and Defendants create a predatorial gambling environment, deliberately misleading consumers to the risk of gambling addiction and jeopardizing the financial well-being of consumers and their families.”
Celebrity Promotions at Center of Legal Claims
The lawsuit places significant emphasis on promotional activities by Drake and Ross, arguing their content encouraged user participation without adequate disclosure about the gambling risks involved. Plaintiffs contend these promotions violated state gambling laws and misled consumers about the platform’s operations.
The complaint further alleges that Drake played on the platform using house funds rather than his own money, a fact that was never disclosed to users who watched his streams or followed his social media posts promoting the service.
Allegations Extend to Music Streaming Manipulation
In an unusual expansion beyond typical gambling litigation, the lawsuit connects Stake.us payment systems to alleged manipulation of music streaming numbers. The complaint claims internal transfer tools on the platform, including tipping features, enabled large sums to move between accounts with minimal oversight.
These transfers allegedly funded bot farms used to artificially inflate streaming counts on major music platforms. The filing describes a coordinated effort among defendants “to conceal, route, and distribute proceeds of the scheme through Stake.us pseudo-anonymous payment rails.”
Specific transactions cited in the complaint include a $100,000 tip routed through the platform and a separate $220,000 transfer characterized as a gift to Ross.
Growing Pattern of Sweepstakes Casino Legal Challenges
This case adds to mounting legal pressure facing the sweepstakes casino sector. Television host Ryan Seacrest previously faced litigation related to his promotion of Chumba Casino, while separate litigation in Missouri already names Stake.us, Drake, and Ross as defendants over similar allegations.
Plaintiffs argue these cases collectively demonstrate a pattern where entertainment figures amplify gambling platforms while the underlying financial mechanics remain concealed from users.
RICO Claims Open Door to Substantial Damages
The plaintiffs seek class certification and damages of at least $5 million, along with injunctive relief, declaratory judgments, and disgorgement of allegedly improperly obtained funds.
The inclusion of Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) violations significantly raises the stakes. RICO claims allow for triple damages, legal costs, and attorney fees if violations are proven, potentially exposing defendants to substantially higher financial liability than standard civil claims.
The case represents a test of how courts will interpret the legal boundaries of sweepstakes casino operations and celebrity endorsement responsibilities in the digital gambling space.
