Every article is checked before it is published. This policy explains what we check and which sources we trust.
What we check
- Names, job titles and company names, against the company's own site or filing.
- Numbers: revenue, fines, market sizes, dates and percentages, against the original document.
- Quotes, against the recording, the written statement or the published source.
- Claims about laws and licences, against the regulator's or the lawmaker's own publication.
Sources we rely on
- Primary sources first: regulators, official registers, company filings, court documents, and statements made on the record.
- Reports from other news outlets are used with credit and a link, and only when we cannot reach the primary source.
- Anonymous sources are used rarely, and only when an editor knows who the source is and why they cannot be named.
When a fact cannot be confirmed
If we cannot confirm a claim, we either leave it out or say clearly who makes the claim and that it has not been confirmed.
Press releases
A press release is the voice of the company that sent it. We confirm where it comes from. We do not check every claim inside it, which is why it carries the label "Press release".
After publication
Readers can report an error at any time. See our Corrections policy.
