The issue was identified after an alert customer notified Norsk Rikstoto upon discovering they had breached their own spending limit. The programming error was related to reserved amounts for games purchased through the syndicate betting platforms Andelstorget and På Lag.
"The deviation was caused by a programming error in our systems, which has now been corrected. The error meant that a limited number of customers in certain situations were able to bet more than the legally required spending limit they had set themselves. We deeply regret this," said Camilla Garmann, Chief Executive Officer of Norsk Rikstoto, in an official statement.
The affected customers collectively spent NOK 4 million (approximately $370,000) that should have been blocked by their personal spending limits. Norsk Rikstoto has committed to refunding all customers for the amounts that exceeded their designated limits.
The operator emphasized that the technical issue has been fully resolved and additional measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. This development comes as Norway maintains strict responsible gambling regulations, with mandatory spending limits forming a key component of player protection frameworks.
