Global Review Results in Staff Reductions Across Multiple Locations
Games Global has confirmed staff reductions across its global operations, including at its Isle of Man headquarters, as part of a strategic restructuring initiative. The company, which acquired Microgaming’s distribution business in 2022, implemented the workforce changes following a comprehensive operational review.
In a statement, the company said: “Over the past quarter, Games Global has conducted a global review of operations aimed at enhancing efficiency and aligning its structure toward future priorities and growth.”
“As part of this review, the business has made the decision to streamline the size of its global workforce, in response to both evolving technology efficiencies and the scale at which it has grown over the past four years.”
The company acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision: “While these decisions have been difficult, they are essential to ensuring long-term competitiveness and ability to invest in sustainable innovation.”
CEO Addresses Strategic Rationale
CEO Walter Bugno explained the reasoning behind the restructuring: “This restructuring is a proactive step to ensure Games Global remains well positioned to meet the evolving needs of our customers, capitalise on emerging market opportunities, and maintain a strong focus on investment in innovation.”
The workforce reduction affects multiple locations within Games Global’s global network, which includes operations in the Isle of Man, United Kingdom, Gibraltar, Malta, Estonia, South Africa, Brazil, and the United States. The company employs more than 1,000 people globally.
Impact on Isle of Man Operations
Games Global cut several roles at its Douglas headquarters in the Isle of Man, the island’s Department for Enterprise confirmed. The company maintains its headquarters on Circular Road in Douglas and employs a significant local workforce.
The Department for Enterprise issued a statement: “The Department for Enterprise is aware that Games Global has recently undertaken a global review of operations which has resulted in the displacement of a number of positions within their Isle of Man office.”
The department noted that the restructuring affects Games Global’s operations globally and is not limited to the Isle of Man office. “The department understands this decision reflects efforts to enhance efficiency and align structures toward future growth.”
LinkedIn posts indicate that several management-level positions have been affected by the reductions. One employee with nearly three decades of experience posted: “After 28 years, I finally got my marching orders yesterday (October 22) with many others.”
Industry Context and Company Background
The restructuring at Games Global follows similar organizational changes elsewhere in the Isle of Man’s gaming sector. In August, Derivco Isle of Man, which operates adjacent to Games Global on Circular Road, entered consultation with staff regarding potential redundancies as part of a global reorganization.
Founded in 2022 under the leadership of CEO Walter Bugno, Games Global has established itself as a significant player in the iGaming content supply sector. The company provides casino content and platform technology to hundreds of brands worldwide, managing a portfolio of proprietary and partner studio games across more than 50 studios.
Government Support for Affected Workers
The Department for Enterprise emphasized that the Isle of Man’s digital sector remains robust despite the restructuring. “While the loss of jobs is a difficult outcome of this decision, the nature of a strong economy means skills are in high demand,” the department stated.
Through Digital Isle of Man, the department is providing support to affected individuals, including signposting to resources and information about alternative employment opportunities on the island.
