Verheij will succeed Bernadette van Buchem in the role. Verheij currently serves as secretary-director of the Dutch Safety Board and brings substantial public sector leadership experience to the position. Her previous roles include general director of Justis and acting general director of the Child Protection Council, both organizations within the Ministry of Justice and Security. Focus on Legal Frameworks and Compliance In her new role, Verheij will concentrate on legal frameworks, governance, integrity and compliance matters alongside her vice-chair responsibilities. These areas represent critical priorities for the KSA as it adapts to the evolving regulatory landscape of the Dutch gambling market. “With Carol, an experienced public administrator is joining our Board of Directors,” said KSA chairman Michel Groothuizen. “In addition to her role as vice-chair of the Board of Directors, she will focus primarily on issues related to legal frameworks, governance, integrity, and compliance.” Groothuizen added that these topics are constantly evolving within the dynamic field of the Netherlands Gambling Authority, and that Verheij’s appointment supports the regulator’s development of a future-proof organizational structure aligned with its strategic ambitions. Cross-Border Market Responsibility Verheij acknowledged the significant social responsibility that comes with her new position, particularly in safeguarding young people in the gambling market. “I am very much looking forward to dedicating my energy, knowledge, and experience to the Netherlands Gambling Authority,” Verheij said. “The Netherlands Gambling Authority has an important social responsibility: ensuring that people, especially young people, can gamble safely.” She noted that the online gambling market’s cross-border nature has added an unprecedented dimension to this responsibility, and expressed her commitment to working with colleagues and partners to positively impact the reliability and security of the gambling market. The appointment comes as the KSA continues to strengthen its regulatory framework following the opening of the Dutch online gambling market in October 2021. The regulator has maintained an active enforcement approach while working to balance market growth with player protection priorities. Source: Kansspelautoriteit
