PointsBet Canada Opens Pre-Registration for Alberta

PointsBet Canada has opened pre-registration for sports betting and online casino services in Alberta, establishing an early presence in what will become Canada’s second openly competitive regulated iGaming jurisdiction after Ontario.

The company has begun the provincial registration process and received authorization from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to market services and pre-register Alberta residents while regulatory approval continues. Eligible users can now register on PointsBet’s website to receive launch notifications and welcome offers ahead of the platform’s full commercial launch expected within the coming months.

Open Market Framework

Alberta is preparing to transition from its current government-operated monopoly model to a multi-operator licensing framework similar to Ontario’s regulated market structure. The AGLC is overseeing the regulatory process as the province moves toward market liberalization.

“Alberta’s move toward an open, competitive iGaming framework is a positive step for Canadian players, offering more choice and consumer protections in a safe and regulated environment,” said Scott Vanderwel, Chief Executive of PointsBet Canada.

“We’re excited to introduce our innovative, Canadian-focused sports betting and online casino products to Alberta residents, supported by industry-leading speed, responsible gaming tools, and local expertise,” he added.

Canadian-Built Platform

PointsBet Canada emphasized its expansion will leverage proprietary technology and a locally staffed operational model. The company operates its platform using in-house technology systems and employs Canadian-based staff to support product development and customer operations tailored to the Canadian market.

Alberta will mark PointsBet’s second provincial market in Canada. The operator currently holds a license in Ontario, where it offers sports betting, horse racing wagering, and online casino games. The company has reported sustained growth in Ontario since the market opened to private operators in April 2022.

Market Transition Timeline

Alberta currently permits regulated online wagering exclusively through the government-operated Play Alberta platform. That monopoly structure is expected to end as early as 2026 following the passage of iGaming legislation in May 2025 designed to establish a competitive licensing regime and address unregulated offshore betting activity.

PointsBet reported 26% revenue growth in Ontario during fiscal year 2025, which helped offset a C$15.1 million ($11.2 million) EBITDA loss. The company attributed Ontario’s performance to favorable regulatory conditions including competitive licensing fees and tax rates compared to other Canadian jurisdictions.

The Alberta market represents a significant expansion opportunity for licensed operators as the province follows Ontario’s regulatory approach to creating a multi-operator iGaming market with consumer protection standards and responsible gaming requirements.
